Hello everyone--wow that font is wonderful.

Was going to say something instead of wonderful, but it was largely due to my shock. I have no idea what this place is, but it has me curious... and I do love to rant so... we'll see how this goes.

Welcome!

[community profile] newcomers has lots of resources about how to use Dreamwidth and where to find things you'll enjoy here. If you're coming from Tumblr, [personal profile] soc_puppet has posted tutorials for that angle. Find your Tumblr friends here.

The Follow Friday Master Post has lists of active communities by topic where you can look for some based on your interests, including some of the Most Useful Communities. Many bloggers use recurring posts to pin down their key interests and maintain activity, which is also a good source of inspiration if you aren't sure what you want to post yet.

The next big event will be [community profile] marchmetamatterschallenge for archiving or writing new meta such as reviews, canon overviews, or fanifestos.

Hi, saw you followed me, welcome!

ysabet already included some good tips, but I also keep a list of communities on Dreamdwidth that I find useful/interesting. That list was recently updated, and is posted here:

If you have any questions about DW, feel free to ask me -- I love to help folks out, and I'm here often (and have been a long-time member) so I know quite a bit about how the site works.

So, Dreamwdith is a code fork of LiveJournal which got its start way back in 1999. Dreamwidth has been around since 2009 itself. I like it here very much. The owners both are very sensible people who care about the community of the site rather than making massive profits.

In a nutshell, DW is a personal journaling site with comments. It also has communities people can join; like personal journals, community members can post to the community and others can comment on the posts.

You can subscribe to people and communities in order to be able to read their posts on your reading page. You can also grant access to folks so they can read your access-locked posts. Subscribing and granting access were specifically separated on Dreamwidth when the site started. This way, you can make it so only your closest friends read updates about your life, if you so wanted.

There is a lot of customization here, yes! I like that myself. As for it being on the web instead of mobile: the code is OLD, from being smart phones were really a thing. They've done their best to make the site accessible via mobile (I sometimes read my own journal entries from my phone while in therapy), but there likely won't be a mobile app because the site doesn't have many developers, and it's a complicated issue due to the cruftiness of the code. They ARE working on the API (tech speak; APIs allow third-party apps to access web sites) so when that is done, it's possible a volunteer developer can build a mobile app.

I mostly use the internet from a desktop computer myself, so I have no issues with there not being a mobile app. I hope you enjoy your time here! It's a special site.
